THE HAMSA HAND

The hamsa hand (Arabic) or the hamesh hand (Hebrew) is an old and recently very popular amulet for magical protection from the envious or the evil eye.The words hamesh and hamsa mean five and refer to the digits of the hand. An alternative Islamic name is the Hand of Fatima in reference to the daughter of Mohammed while an alternative Jewish name is the Hand of Miriam in reference to the sister of Moses and Aaron.

The hansa hand appears as a two-thumbed symmetrical form.

Although most hamsa hands are amulets, modern Israeli ones are sometimes made in the form of ceramic wall plaques in which hand lettered Hebrew prayers occupies the center of the palm.
